| biography:
| Cricketer, born in Merton, Greater London. He began playing for Surrey in 1981, made his Test debut in 1990, and by late 2002 had played in 122 Tests, scoring 7919 runs and 15 centuries, and making 249 dismissals. Undaunted by his already weighty responsibilities as opening batsman and wicketkeeper, he took over as England captain in 1998, leading them to their first win in a five-test series for 12 years. A highly effective forcing batsman, his career has been hampered by selectorial indecision about whether or not he should keep wicket. He scored a century in each innings v West Indies at Bridgetown in 1993–4. His father, Mickey Stewart, played for and captained Surrey and won England caps, as well as managing the national side. |
