| biography:
| Poet and critic, born in Cooma, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at Sydney and Oxford, and became professor of literature at the Australian National University. His works include The Wandering Islands (1955) and Poems (1960). His Collected Poems (1972) is one of the major books of Australian verse, and later works include the play Ladies from the Sea (1987) and Orpheus (1991). He wrote according to strict metrical rules and eschewed modernism. |
