| One of the greatest Greek lyric poets. He was born and lived at Mytilene on the island of Lesbos, Greece, and was a contemporary of Sappho. He was the first exponent of the so-called Alcaic four-lined stanza, which was named after him. Of the 10 books of odes he is said to have composed, only fragments now remain. |
