| biography:
| Latin poet, considered by Quintilian to be the greatest elegiac writer. He fought in Aquitania, but withdrew from military life and became a member of a literary circle in Rome. The heroine of his first book of love poetry was the wife of an officer absent on service in Cilicia; of his second, a fashionable courtesan. The other works under his name are probably by several authors. |
