| Judge, born in Cape Town, SW South Africa. He studied at the South African College, and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. He became a judge of the Cape provincial division of the Supreme Court of South Africa (1935), a judge of appeal (1939), and chief justice (1950–7). He played a substantial part in restoring Roman–Dutch law in South Africa. |
