| biography:
| Philosopher, bishop, and doctor of the Church, born in Lauingen, S Germany. In 1254 he became provincial of the Dominicans in Germany, and in 1260 was named Bishop of Ratisbon. Of his works the most notable are the Summa theologiae and the Summa de creaturis. He excelled all his contemporaries in the breadth of his learning, and did more than anyone to bring about that union of theology and Aristotelianism which is the basis of scholasticism. He was canonized in 1931 and named a doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI. Thomas Aquinas was his most famous pupil. Feast day 15 November. |
