| Dutch politician and lawyer, born in Deventer, C Netherlands. Governor-general of the Netherlands East Indies (1851–5), he tried to increase the economic condition of the population but came up against opposition from the minister of colonial affairs, Pahud de Mortanges, who regarded the Netherlands East Indies as a ‘colonial profit centre’. Duymaer did much to open the area to increasing world trade, and also improved native and European education. The Lebak affair (Multatuli) occurred during his tenure. He was an MP 1858–62 (Lower House) and 1865–81 (Upper House). |
