| Italian condottiere. He commanded the ‘Compagnia della morte’ (Company of Death), made up of Lombard youth, and at the Battle of Legnano (1176) was instrumental in the Lombard League's defeat of Frederick Barbarossa. During the Risorgimento he was seen as a symbol of Italian recovery by, among others, Giuseppe Verdi and Giosuè Carducci. |
