| biography:
| Painter, writer, and musician, born in Athens, Greece, the brother of painter Giorgio de Chirico. He mixed with Surrealist circles in Paris, and in 1916 came into contact with metaphysical painting, about which he wrote a series of articles. In his paintings, classical myths are re-elaborated with gentle irony, as shown in ‘Oggetti nella foresta’ (1927, private collection, Brescia) and ‘L'annunciazione’ (1932, Gallery of Modern Art, Milan). His many literary works include the surrealist poem ‘Chants de la mi-mort’ (1914), characterized by a mix of fantasy, dream, and allegory; Hermafrodito (1916), an experimental novel in verse and prose in Italian and French; Achille innamorato (1938), Ascolta il tuo cuore, città (1942), and plays, operas, and ballets. |
