| biography:
| Aviation pioneer, born in Santos Dumont (formerly Palmyra), SE Brazil. He studied in France, where he spent most of his life. After a balloon ascent in 1898, he built an airship in which he made the first flight from Saint-Cloud round the Eiffel Tower and back (1901). Two years later he built the first airship station, at Neuilly. He then experimented with heavier-than-air machines, and eventually achieved the first officially observed powered flight in Europe (1906), in a plane constructed on the principle of the box-kite. In 1909 he succeeded in building a light monoplane, a forerunner of modern light aircraft. |
