| Physicist, born in San Diego, California, USA. He performed research at the University of Illinois (1951–3), moved to Cornell (1953–8), and was a solid-state physicist at the Ford Motor Co (1958–73) before joining Purdue (1973). He made many contributions to the study of the behaviour of conduction electrons in metals, including discovering the now-called Overhauser effect of dynamic polarization (1953). |
