| biography:
| Painter, born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. He moved to New York (c.1868), was a founder of the Society of American Artists, New York (1878), travelled to England (1877), settled again in New York and, by 1900, had become a recluse. A religious and mystical man who shunned personal possessions, he painted dreamlike scenes with powerful emotional content, such as ‘Toilers of the Sea’ (1884) and ‘Moonlight’ (1885). About 165 oils survive that have suffered deterioration due to his overpainting and to chemical reactions. Nevertheless, his important work continues to impress, and forgeries are numerous. |
