| German politician, born in Myslowice, S Poland. He joined the Kommunistiche Partei Deutschlands (KPD) in 1921 and was editor of party newspapers from 1925. He emigrated to France (1933) and to the USA (1941), returning to East Germany (1946), when he joined the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SED). He joined the German Democratic Republic (DDR) Information Bureau (1949–52), was a member of the SED Central Committee (1955–81) and its secretariat, and also of the Politbüro. In 1976–81 he was a member of the Staatsrat. |
