| Adult educator, born in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, SWC England, UK. He left school aged 14, but after attending classes at King's College, London, he became an evening-class teacher under the London School Board. He was instrumental in the formation of the Workers' Educational Association, of which he become general secretary (1905), and the National Central Library (1916). |
