| biography:
| US senator and historian, born in Lorain, Ohio, USA. A lawyer by profession, he served in the US Senate (Republican, Indiana, 1899–1911), where he was one of the original ‘insurgent’ Republicans, supporting anti-trust and anti-child labour legislation as well as naval expansion and imperialist policies. After being defeated for re-election as a Republican, he supported Theodore Roosevelt in the 1912 Progressive Party campaign. He was also known for his historical writings, particularly The Life of John Marshall (1916–19). |
