| England footballer, born in Newcastle-upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE England, UK. He played for Southampton (1988–92), then transferred to Blackburn Rovers (1992–6) at a then record British fee of £3·2 million. He transferred to Newcastle United in 1996 for a world record fee of £15 million. By June 1997 he had a tally of 213 league goals. He joined the England squad in 1992, becoming captain in 1996, and by mid-2000 (when he announced his international retirement) had won 62 caps. He was named 1994 Footballer of the Year and 1995 Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year. In April 2002 he achieved his 200th goal for Newcastle United. |
