| biography:
| Chemist, born in New Zealand. He went to the USA and studied at the University of Wisconsin (1953) and at Cambridge, UK (1955). He joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania (1955) where he became professor of chemistry (1988). In 2000 he shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Alan J Heeger and Hideki Shirakawa for their discovery and development of conductive polymers. |
