| Gardener, broadcaster, and writer, born in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He became an apprentice gardener for Ilkley Urban District Council (1964–8), then joined the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew (1972–4). He began presenting radio and television programmes for the BBC, and became a household name for his expert advice on gardening matters. In 1996 he began presenting the popular radio series, Gardener's World, and fronted TV 's Ground Force (1997–2003). A regular contributor to magazines and newspapers, his books include Gardening Techniques (1981), Alan Titchmarsh's Complete Book of Gardening (1999), The Ground Force Weekend Workbook (2000), and How To Be a Gardener (2002). He has also written novels, including The Last Lighthouse Keeper (1999). |
