| biography:
| Businessman, born in London, UK. He emigrated to Fremantle, Western Australia, in 1951, and formed a company dealing in insurance, property, and resources. The Bond Corporation developed extensive interests in Australian newspapers and television, brewing, oil and gas, and gold mining. In 1983 his syndicate's yacht Australia II was the first since 1870 to challenge the USA successfully for the America's Cup. With the ending of the economic boom in 1987, his empire began to fall: receivers were appointed to Bond Brewing in 1989, and in 1992 he was declared bankrupt and convicted on a charge of dishonesty in business dealings with a merchant bank. He was acquitted after spending six months in jail, but in 1996 he was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for failing to declare assets, and in 1997 received an additional 4-year sentence on charges of fraud. |
