| Playwright, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He was a schoolteacher before he turned to writing. He became known through the popular TV series, The Boys from the Blackstuff (1982), about a group of unemployed Liverpudlians, which won several awards. Later television series include the World War 1 drama The Monocled Mutineer (1986), GBH (1991), Melissa (1997), and his adaptation of Oliver Twist (1999). He has written several stage plays, including Are You Lonesome Tonight? (1985), a respectful musical about Elvis Presley. |
