| biography:
| Novelist, born in Brest, NW France. He studied in Paris, and worked as an agronomist, then in a publishing house. After his first novel, Les Gommes (1953, The Erasers), he emerged as the leader of the nouveau roman group, contributing to the genre such novels as Le Voyeur (1955, The Voyeur) and La Jalousie (1959, Jealousy), and the theoretical work Pour un nouveau roman (1963, Towards the New Novel). Later novels include Un Régicide (1978) and La Belle Captive (1995). He also wrote essays and film scenarios, notably L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961, Last Year at Marienbad). |
