| Film director, born in Vannes, NW France. He studied in Paris, and made a series of prize-winning short documentaries, such as Van Gogh (1948, Oscar) and Guernica (1950). His first feature film was Hiroshima mon amour (1959, Hiroshima, My Love), and this was followed by the controversial L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961, Last Year at Marienbad), hailed as a Surrealistic and dreamlike masterpiece by some, as a confused and tedious failure by others. His later films include Mon Oncle d'Amérique (1980, My American Uncle), La vie est un roman (1983, Life is a Novel), Mélo (1986), Smoking/No Smoking (1993), and On Connaît la Chanson (1997, Same Old Song). |
