| biography:
| Novelist and playwright, born in Sarzeau, NW France. A poor but well-educated orphan, he studied law in Paris briefly, but married early and sought his fortune in literature. The Abbé de Lionne allowed him a pension and access to a good Spanish library. He became a prolific playwright, sometimes accused of borrowing stories from others. He is best known for the novel Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane (12 vols, 1715–35, The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane). As a playwright, his leading work is Turcaret (1708). |
