| A family of French organists: Albert (1880–1971), organist at St Germain-en-Laye (1924), wrote motets and numerous pieces for the organ. Jehan (1911–40) his son, born in St Germain, was a brilliant organist and composer, and a pupil of Dupré at the Conservatoire de Paris. He wrote 93 organ pieces and chamber music, including a quintet for strings. He favoured mystery over charm. Olivier (1918–94), his brother, born in St Germain-en-Laye, was a pianist and composer, and a pupil of Messiaen and Aubin. A director of conservatoires, including l'Ecole César Franck de Paris, he wrote works for organ and piano, an oratorio Chant Funèbre sur les Morts en Montagne (1950), and a study on harmony. Marie-Claire (1926– ), his sister, born in St Germain-en-Laye, studied with Dupré and Duruflé at the Conservatoire de Paris, where she became a teacher. As an organist she specialized in 17th-c and 18th-c works on instruments of the period. She harmonizes Christmas carols and French songs, and has made many recordings, including some complete works by Bach. |
