| biography:
| Composer and conductor, born in Paris, France. He studied under Dukas at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he succeeded Roger-Ducasse as professor of composition in 1945, and was conductor at Radio Télévision Française. He composed instrumental and vocal music for large groups, Cressida (by Suarès) and La Chasse Infernale (from Hugo), an opera Goya, the romantic Symphonie (1936), and music for film, theatre, and radio. He was influenced by Franck and Dukas, and produced harmonic writing in the tradition of Fauré and Ravel. He became president of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1979. Among his awards was the Prix de Rome (1930) for his cantata Actéon. |
