| Emperor of Japan (1989– ), born in Tokyo, Japan, the son of Hirohito. He studied among commoners at the elite Gakushuin school, and in 1959 married Michiko Shoda (1934– ), the daughter of a flour company president, who thus became the first non-aristocrat to enter the imperial family. They have three children: Crown Prince Naruhito (1960– ), Prince Fumihito (1963– ), and Princess Sayako (1969– ). An amateur marine biologist, he is also an accomplished cellist. On becoming emperor in 1989, the new Heisei (‘the achievement of universal peace’) era commenced. In 2001 Crown Prince Naruhito and his wife, Masako, celebrated the birth of a baby daughter. |
