| Rabbi and teacher in Palestine. He founded a rabbinical school at Jaffa, and provided the basis for the Mishnah by his codification of the halakhoth (legal traditions). He was a supporter of the unsuccessful revolt of bar Kokhba against Hadrian (131–5), and was put to death by the Romans. |
