| Egyptian king of the 18th dynasty. He renounced the worship of the old gods, introduced a monotheistic solar cult of the sun-disc (Aton), and changed his name. He built a new capital at Amarna (Akhetaton), where the arts blossomed while the empire weakened. One of his wives was Nefertiti. |
