| biography:
| Egyptian soldier and nationalist leader. He was the leader of a movement against the khedive, Tewfik Pasha, in 1881 which led to the setting up of a nationalist government. The British intervened to protect their financial interests in Egypt, and he was defeated at Tel-el-Kebir (1882) and exiled to Ceylon. He was pardoned in 1901. |
