| Biologist and pioneer bacteriologist, born in Lodi, N Italy. He studied at Pavia, and his work on animal diseases partly anticipated that of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch. As early as 1835 he showed that a disease of silkworms (muscardine) was fungal in origin and contagious, and proposed that many other diseases are transmitted by micro-organisms. |
