| Roman Catholic bishop and broadcaster, born near Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. Ordained in 1932, he became assistant to the head of religious broadcasting at the BBC (1955–67), and adviser to the Independent Broadcasting Authority (1968–75). Meanwhile he became known as a TV commentator for many papal and national events, and was founder and director of the National Catholic Radio and TV Centre at Hatch End, Greater London (1955–80). Having been made titular Bishop of Numana, he became from 1980 external head of the Vatican commission for communication. |
