| King of Sparta (399–360 BC). Called on by the Ionians to assist them in 397 BC against Artaxerxes II, he launched an ambitious campaign in Asia, but the Corinthian War recalled him to Greece. At Coronea (394 BC) he defeated the Greek allied forces, and peace was eventually concluded in favour of Sparta (387 BC). He precipitated the Battle of Leuctra against Thebes (371 BC), a disaster which signified the end of Spartan ascendancy and the beginning of a decade of Theban supremacy in Greece. |
