| Ruler of Syracuse, born at Terme, Sicily. After seizing power in 317 BC, he clashed with the Carthaginians and was defeated at Ecnomo (310 BC). When the Carthaginians besieged Syracuse, Agathocles brought the war to Africa. After achieving peace, he was left in control of all Sicily apart from Agrigento. At his death, he bequeathed his possessions to the people of Syracuse. |
