| Portuguese viceroy of the Indies, born near Lisbon. He landed on the Malabar coast (of modern Kerala) in 1502, conquered Goa (1510), and established the basis of the Portuguese East Indies. He established a reputation for his wisdom and fairness, but was replaced peremptorily by the king in 1515. |
