| biography:
| Painter, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He specialized in moonlit canal and river scenes. Although his paintings are now regarded as major works of the Dutch school, he received little recognition in his own time. In 1658 he gave up painting in order to open a wineshop. He was no more successful in this venture, and returned to painting in 1662 after being declared bankrupt. Two of his sons became artists: Eglon (1634–1703) and Jan (1638–65). |
