| biography:
| The only Dutch pope (1522–3), born in Utrecht, W Netherlands. He studied in Louvain, became a doctor of theology (1491), and was appointed tutor in 1507 to the seven-year-old Charles, later to be King of Spain (as Charles I) and Holy Roman Emperor (as Charles V). In 1516, Charles made Adrian inquisitor-general of Aragón and co-regent. He was elected cardinal in 1517. As pope he tried to attack the sale of indulgences which had prompted Luther's first revolt, and allied with the emperor, England, and Venice against France. He also tried, unsuccessfully, to unite the Christian forces against the Turks. |
