| Writer, born in Bergen, The Netherlands. He studied Dutch and South African languages and literature, and translated the work of Breyten Breytenbach. He made his debut with the short novel Nathan Sid, an autobiographical story about his childhood in a repatriated Indonesian family. Recurring themes in his work are awakening sexuality and the relationship of a child to its parents. He also writes travel reports, of which Een barbaar in China (1987, A Barbarian in China), about his journey along the silk route, became a bestseller. |
