| biography:
| Poet and novelist, born in IJmuiden, W Netherlands. He made his debut as a poet in 1939 with Hartslag (Heartbeat), a volume of traditional poetry centring around the relationship between a man, a woman, and a child. In later works, female beauty, eroticism, and sexuality constitute his poetical subject matter. As a novelist, he wrote mainly autobiographical sketches, including one about his daughters Alissa en Adrienne (1957, Alissa and Adrienne). His anecdotal prose has a melancholic undertone and is characterized by uninhibited and sharp observations. In addition, he has worked as a translator and art critic. |
