| Geologist, born in San Francisco, California, USA. He worked with the US Geological Survey (1906–45) while concurrently teaching at Yale (1920–51), and became a visiting professor at Stanford (1951–7). He made major contributions to mineralogy and mining, radioisotopic geochronology, and igneous petrology as exemplified by investigations of the Boulder batholith in Montana. |
