| biography:
| Dutch sailor, by 1543 captain in the navy of Admiral Maximilian of Burgundy. He stayed loyal to official government during the Revolt of the Netherlands. He took part in the Battle of the Zuider Zee (1573) under Boussu, and in 1574 was vice-admiral of the fleet trying to relieve the siege of Middelburg by the ‘Geuzen’ (‘Beggars’), but was defeated at Lillo. He was captured at Zierikzee, but freed when the town was taken by Mondragon. |
