| biography:
| Actor, born in Barcelona, NE Spain. He began in drama with Radio Barcelona in 1946 and later joined the theatrical companies of Alejandro Ulloa, Carlos Lemos, and Catalina Bárcena. In 1951 he moved to Madrid and acted in the play En la ardiente oscuridad by Antonio Buero Vallejo, presented by the Teatro María Guerrero. After working for a while in the Teatro Nacional, he formed his own company in 1956. His first film Mariona Rebull (1946) was directed by José Luis Sáenz de Heredia, and during the 1950s he was offered several supporting rôles in films, including El frente infinito (1956, director Pedro Lazaga). His portrayal of Ramón y Cajal in the film Salto a la gloria (1959, director Leon Klimovsky) - a character which he also played in the television adaptation in 1981 - received several awards. He starred in and directed Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 1999. He is the father of the actresses Blanca and Cristina Marsillach. |
