| Biochemist, born in Bremerhaven-Lehe, NW Germany. He studied at Marburg and Göttingen, and went on to carry out research into sex hormones. He isolated oestrone from pregnancy urine (1929), and in 1931 isolated the male hormone androsterone, also investigating the chemical structure of progestin. He shared the 1939 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, but was forbidden to accept it by the Nazi regime. |
