| US politician and vice-president, born in Christian Co, Kentucky, USA, the grandfather of Adlai Stevenson. As first assistant postmaster (1885–9), he supported patronage and dismissed thousands of people. As vice-president during Grover Cleveland's second term (1893–7), he made many friends and presided gracefully over the Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for the vice-presidency (1900) and the governorship of Illinois (1908). |
