| Printmaker and painter, born in Riga, Latvia. He studied in St Petersburg, Berlin, Paris, and London, maintained a studio in Stockholm, Sweden (1942–5), and emigrated to the USA, settling in Albuquerque, NM. Considered an important woodcut artist working in colour, he used a painterly approach to his medium, as seen in the polyptych called ‘Magnificat’ (1953). |
