| biography:
| Portrait painter in oil and pastels, born in Paris, France. She was elected to the Academy in 1783, with her rival Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun. Working in oils and pastels, Labille-Guiard had a successful career as official portrait painter during the Revolution, and was a committed teacher of other female artists. In 1793 her ‘Reception of a Knight of St Lazare’ was ordered to be destroyed because it contained a portrait of Louis XVI's brother, effectively ending her career as a historical painter. |
