| German politician, born in Thalheim, S Germany. A member of the German Communist Party (KPD), he was instrumental in founding the German Democratic Republic's future ruling party, the German Socialist Unity Party (SED), in 1946. Until 1948 he was a proponent of the ‘special German way to socialism’. Expelled from the SED Central Committee in 1954, he was rehabilitated in 1956. |
