| Italian statesman, prime minister (1996–8), and president of the European Commission (1999– ), born in Scandiano, Emilia-Romagna, N Italy. He studied in Milan and at the London School of Economics, and worked in universities in Italy and the USA before becoming an MP. He was industry minister (1978–9) and twice president of IRI (Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale) (1982–9, 1993–4). In 1995 he headed a centre-left alliance called L'Ulivo, which was successful in the 1996 elections and he became prime minister. He was appointed president of the European Commission following the mass resignation of all the commissioners over a highly critical report detailing severe maladministration, and introduce a code of conduct for future commissioners to follow. |
