| French soldier, born in Versailles, NC France. In the war with Austria of 1859 he captured Solferino in Italy, and in the Mexican expedition was placed in command of the army (1862). He was promoted Marshal of France in 1864. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1, he was trapped by the Prussians at Metz, and surrendered after a siege of 54 days. For this he was court-martialled and imprisoned in 1873, but a year later escaped to Spain. |
