| The first Muslim caliph, one of the earliest converts to Islam, born in Mecca. He became chief adviser to Mohammed, who married his daughter Aïshah, and on the death of the prophet was elected leader of the Muslim community (632). In his short reign he put down a religious and political revolt, and set in motion the great wave of Arab conquests over Persia, Iraq, and the Middle East. He began the compilation of the Qur'an. |
