| Mathematician, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is known primarily for his work with associative and non-associative algebras and Riemann matrices. A National Academy of Science member, he chaired the University of Chicago Mathematics Department (1958–62), fought for government funding of mathematics during the 1950s and 1960s, and was vice-president of the International Mathematical Union (1971). |
